Pink Period

This body of work explores the ideas of being diagnosed and coping with learning differences, specifically Dyslexia (a neurological difference in the way someone reads, spells, writes, and can interpret information.) I convey this through mid-size paintings using acrylic, graphite, charcoal, and oil pastels.

The inspiration for the series, Pink Period, comes from childhood by looking at paintings, schoolwork, and journal entries created prior to my diagnosis of Dyslexia. Using these documents to reconfigure and simplify is important since this was when education, logic, and rules did not exist, everything was up for interpretation. My process includes deconstructing these images and reducing information to simple lines and shapes. Some works are accompanied by phases or thoughts to provoke the viewer to reanalyze the images in case they have misinterpreted them, which I so often do within a daily conversation. Pink Period is attempting to challenge the viewer to see the ideas and thoughts of someone with learning differences through visual media by providing little information and leaving it up to your interpretation.
